There’s a new tiny home community opening in 2023 with an amazing story and mission. We recently had the pleasure of chatting with Melissa Jones at Tiny Timbers Agrihood in St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin. It’s hard not to be impressed with what her and her husband, Shane, have achieved. Both grew up in rural settings where coexisting with nature was a core family value. Shane has an interest in regenerative farming fueled by his passion for protecting our soils and promoting sustainability. Melissa has a background in real estate and felt compelled to provide people with an alternative to rising rents and housing shortages. Her expertise led to a newly passed ordinance in St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin, which she helped spearhead along with Dan Fitzpatrick of the Tiny Home Industry Association, and which was fully supported by local officials.
Thus, Tiny Timbers Agrihood was born! An agrihood is a planned community that incorporates agriculture into a residential neighborhood. Each of the 16 spaces at Tiny Timbers includes space in the communal gardens and access to an orchard and food forest, composting, root cellar, bee yard, greenhouse, crop farming, raised garden beds, chicken coop, and more. Other communal spaces include an outdoor kitchen area, sledding hill, and nature trails. Each lot also comes with a 10×12 storage shed and two parking spaces. It truly is an incredible amount of amenities across the 31-acre property.
Tiny Timbers emphasizes the community mindset in every way. Residents will share tools, be responsible for tending to the gardens, chickens, etc., and gather regularly with other residents. There is no need for 16 residents to own 16 lawnmowers and wheelbarrows. The spirit of cohousing takes center stage as people are encouraged to contribute to and borrow these items. Tiny Timbers is for those who value knowing their neighbors, forming friendships, helping one another, and working together to maintain a beautiful, thriving environment.
Melissa and Shane anticipate welcoming the first residents in May 2023 and are actively accepting applications for lot leases. Interested parties can fill out the application and dweller questionnaire found on their website. For more information, they have a thorough FAQ page as well. And yes, Wind River would love to build your Tiny Timbers home!
