What is an ADU?

An ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) is a secondary residential unit on the same lot as an existing single-family home. ADUs are also referred to as a granny flat, carriage house, or in-law suite.

An ADU can be site built, modular, or a tiny home on wheels, depending on your local ordinance's definition. Most ADU ordinances include both site built and modular tiny homes as permissible ADU structures.

Typically, the ADU is owned by the same property owner(s) as the principal dwelling unit, which in most cases cannot be subdivided or separated in ownership.
